The Dietitians Association of Australia recommends boomer-aged people follow the Dietary Guidelines for Older Australians outlined on its www.daa.asn.au website.

Among the key recommendations are that older people eat a variety of nutritious foods, including foods high in calcium and low in saturated fat.

Association spokeswoman Tania Ferraretto says life changes, such as ageing, can have a significant impact on people's eating habits.

"Retirement often makes a difference to the way people are living," she says. It can go either way but it's often a time that people find they need to think about their health and their weight."

She recommends people visit the assocation's website and make an appointment with an accredited practising dietitian in their area.

Battle Osteoporosis with Calcium enriched Yoghourt

JALNAyoghurt

Bone thinning occurs as part of the natural process of aging and when the thinning continues to the point that your bones become fragile and in danger of breaking, you have osteoporosis. However, osteoporosis and bone loss can be prevented by eating a diet rich in calcium and Vitamin D.

Getting enough calcium and vitamin D is especially critical for women in the first few years after menopause, when bone mass is lost more rapidly. While calcium is in canned fish with edible bones, nuts, seeds, fortified soy beverages and green leafy vegetables, dairy products are the most readily available source of calcium. A glass (250ml) of regular milk has 294mg of calcium and 9.8g of fat, but many low and fat free dairy products — including the Jalna range — have much the same, and often more, calcium than the full-fat alternatives. In addition, yoghourt is not only a good source of calcium but is also high in folic acid, magnesium and zinc, which is needed for healthy skin and hair.

Jalna Vitalize Calcium + is a yoghourt that  has extra calcium and has vitamin D added to assist in calcium absorption. Just one serve of Jalna Vitalize Calcium + provides 40% of the RDI for calcium and around 10% of the RDI for vitamin D for most people, helping them meet their vitamin D needs.

Step up your Immune system this winter

With the winter season fast approaching, it’s time to rug up or risk coming down with one of those nasty cold or flu viruses that infect millions of people each year.

Unfortunately we still haven't found a cure for the common cold and the best we can hope for is prevention. But if we do fall prey, we can relieve the annoying symptoms with a host of natural solutions such as Vitamin C and Echanicea. Taking extra vitamin C and Echanicea throughout your cold can boost immunity and improve healing.

Besides the healthy probiotic aBc bacteria, so important for immune function, Jalna Vitalize Immune + has added vitamin C, Echinacea and the real fruit puree of acai berry, raspberry and pear. That means you can enjoy some dairy goodness while warding away the pesky flu bug at the same time!

Healthy Living Recipes

Need some ideas for dinner? Here are some recipes sure to be a hit with the family.

Bean & eggplant curry

Sautee diced onion, eggplant and garlic.  Add curry paste and cook a few minutes.  Add chicken or vegetable stock, diced cooked potato, canned kidney or baked beans, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce to taste and heat through. Stir in spinach leaves and Jalna Fat Free Natural Yoghourt. Serve with pappadams.

Paprika chicken with savoury fruit salad

Toss together Jalna Low Fat Fruit Salad or Fat Free Apricot Yoghourt, avocado, peach, rockmelon, red onion, red capsicum and parsley.  Sprinkle chicken breasts with paprika and char grill or barbecue. Serve chicken with salad or chop cool chicken and fold through salad.

Sweet chilli lamb with snow peas

Combine Jalna Vitalize, sweet chilli sauce and a slurp of soy sauce. Pour over thinly sliced lamb loin fillets and marinate 10-15 minutes. Pan fry sliced onion and lamb over a moderate heat (so it does not burn). Stir in snow peas. Serve with steamed rice.

Sage & bacon vegetables with garlic yoghourt

Place chopped pumpkin, kumera, red onion, bacon, sage leaves and whole unpeeled garlic cloves in a baking dish and drizzle with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Bake in a hot oven (200°C) for about 25 minutes.  Add green beans and cook 5 more minutes.  Squeeze garlic cloves and mash with Jalna Premium Blend Creamy or BioDynamic Yoghourt or Fat Free Natural Yoghourt. Serve veggies with a dollop of garlic yoghourt, garnished with toasted pine nuts.

Pepper steak with coriander pesto noodles

Sprinkle beef steaks with cracked pepper and char grill or barbecue.  Puree fresh coriander leaves, garlic, lemon juice, salt and pepper.  Add Jalna Premium Blend Creamy or BioDynamic Yoghourt to preferred taste. Stir through hot cooked noodles and serve with beef.

Pumpkin and sage risotto

Saute diced onion and garlic in a pan.  Add Arborio rice and diced, peeled pumpkin and cook for five minutes.  Add chicken stock by the cup until each is absorbed, stirring often. Stir through Jalna Natural Yoghourt, chopped semi-dried tomatoes and fresh sage leaves. Serve parmesan cheese.

Chicken corn and capsicum patties

Combine diced onion, chicken mince, corn kernels, peas, lightly beaten egg and enough breadcrumbs to bind together.  Shape mixture into patties and press each side into extra breadcrumbs.  Bake in a moderate oven for about 30 minutes, turning once. Combine Jalna Vitalize with diced red capsicum and green onion. Serve with patties.
